124.171 Physical Principles for Engineering & Technology 1 (15 credits)

Engineering and technology solutions are designed by applying underlying physical principles. This course extends NCEA Level 3 physics to facilitate this, with a particular focus on linear mechanics, thermophysics and electric circuits. This is a required course for all Engineering and Food Technology students, who will, through tailored tutorial problems and extension activities study physical problems in a suitable context.

  • Students must have achieved at least 16 credits NCEA Level 3 in Physics, or equivalent, or passed course 124.100. It is expected that students have a good grounding in wave systems, mechanical systems and electrical systems. For NCEA qualifications, studies in unit standards AS91523, AS91524, and AS91526 are required. All students must have a good grounding in mathematics. In particular, it is important that you have studied NCEA Level 3 Calculus or equivalent or passed 160.103 or 160.132.
